Respirator masks like the N95 mask are designed to afford a heightened level of protection against particulate matter and contaminants such as respiratory particles that can be carrying bacteria, viruses, or other pathogens. Whereas a surgical mask only provides a physical barrier, respirator face masks are engineered to provide a tight-fitting face cover, especially over the nose and mouth.
These types of masks are tested to ensure proper filtration of droplets and sometimes contain exhalation valves to reduce heat as well. Face masks like the N95, for example, are tested not only to provide a proper fit but to remove at least 95% of particulate contaminants, hence the name.
